- Since releasing the final update to OS X Lion, Apple has released a number of major updates to their operating system. Lion was followed by the release of version 10.8, named Mountain Lion. Apple is now on version 10.13, called High Sierra, and now referes to their operating system as macOS instead of OS X.
- Compared to versions of Mac OS X released after El Capitan, such as Sierra, El Capitan generally is not faster. Mac computers dating from 2012 and later will generally run more smoothly when upgraded from El Capitan, per Apple's optimizations in Sierra and later. On the other hand, Macs from 2008 to 2010 may run faster with El Capitan.

- If any updates are available, click the Update Now button to install them. Or click “More info” to see details about each update and select specific updates to install. You might be asked to enter your administrator password.
- When Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, the installed version of macOS and all of its apps are also up to date. That includes Safari, Music, Photos, Books, Messages, Mail, Calendar and FaceTime.
- To automatically install future updates, including for apps that you got from the App Store, select 'Automatically keep my Mac up to date'. Your Mac will notify you when updates require it to restart, so you can always choose to install those later.
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger was succeeded by Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on October 26, 2007, after 30 months, making Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger the longest running version of Mac OS X. The last security update released for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger users was the 2009-005 update.
